LaTraia makes it to the awards stand for the 100 meter
dash, but I was caught out of position, trying to
capture the activity at the triple jump.
Marvin just missed the awards stand in 2008, finishing
10th. The same can't be said for 2009 where he
finish second.
Travvis found the awards stand for the second time in as
many days. How does he top this in 2010?
The relay team of Meredith, Liya, Maia and LaTraia also
found the awards stand two consecutive days.

Cougars Wrap Up
an Amazing Weekend
The third day of competition was as
good as the previous two days with the Cougars grabbing one
more gold, a silver, a fourth place and a ninth place
(more on this later). In all, the squad of
thirteen runners managed to set three school records and
grab three gold medals. Add to that, a second
place, a third, two fourths and a ninth. This was
by far our most successful Sate Meet in recent memory
(perhaps ever). The girls team tied with Doherty
for eighth (33 points) and the best finish for a 5A
Pikes Peak regional team. The boys team tied
Cherry Creek for fourteenth (25 points). And, if
we combine the
two team scores, only Littleton (158), ThunderRidge
(85), Cherry Creek (81), Rampart (651/2),
Fort Collins (61), and Doherty (59) scored more points
than the Coronado Cougars (58).
Saturday's action was hot right out
of the blocks with LaTraia easily winning the 100 meter
dash in a time of 11.91, besting her closest competitor
by over three tenths of a second. Across the
track, Marvin McChriston was preparing for the triple
jump and started his competition with a very respectable
jump of 43-9. But who would have thought, going
into the competition that a jump of nearly 44 feet would
not be enough to earn a spot in the finals.
Competition was fierce on Saturday and many jumpers were
exceeding their previous PRs by more than a foot.
In fact, a triple jumper from Air Academy had already
laid down a jump of 46' 3", nearly three feet beyond his
previous best. Marvin would certainly have to rise to the
challenge if he had any prayer of reaching the medal
stand. His second jump of 44' 10", moved him into
second place but with little room to spare.
But, that jump did set things up where Marvin could
"go for it" on his third attempt. Bam...Marvin
pops off his best jump ever, soaring 45' 7" to add
significant security to his position. But the top
ten
jumpers had three more attempts in the finals and given
how things were going, there was no telling what might
happen. Marvin hoped that he could get off one
more good jump and somehow catapult beyond the 46' 3"
(leading) standard. Of course the other nine jumpers
were thinking along the same lines. As it turned out, little changed over
the final three jumps and Marvin was secured in his position on the awards stand
on as the runner-up. A sequence of
Marvin's 45' 7" jump can be found on the photo page.
Travvis Scott was setting up his
starting blocks to run the 400 meter dash about the same
time that Marvin was taking his last jump. This
was an extremely competitive field with six runners
capable of running under 49 seconds. Travvis got
out a little slow but fought hard to move up to seventh place;
a spot
that appeared to be just within his grasp. But the two
competitors (he'd worked so hard to catch) were too
tough down the stretch and held off the charge.
Travvis finished with a 50.06 to finish ninth to earn
his spot on awards stand.
The Cougars final Saturday event
brought the Cougars yet another fourth place finish and
served to re-set a two day old school record. The team of
Meredith Green, Liya Scott, Maia Trujillo and LaTraia
Scott sliced a thin margin of .05 seconds off of the
record they had set (earlier) in the preliminaries.
This was a record which seemed to be unbreakable, as it had withstood
three near misses (all within .05 seconds) over the past
twelve months. The most recent "failed attempt" took
place at the Panther 2 Invitational in April where the
Cougars were able to creep within .03 seconds of the
record. The Cougar foursome hoped to make an assault at either the Lady
Tiger Invite or the Apple Blossom Invitational, but conflicting
circumstances foiled each of the attempts. The
record continued it's resilience. So, the relay
team entered the Metro League Meet with the goal of
qualifying for State and lowering the both sprint
relay records. Everything appeared to be
progressing as planned; the Cougars lowered the 4x200
record (by nearly two seconds) early in the morning,
then things suddenly went south. LaTraia fell at the end of
the 200 and had to scratch out of open 200 and, more
importantly, the the 400 relay. The
record had survived another scare and, worse yet, the Cougars would
then have to wait until Sunday morning to see if their
time of 50.39 would hold up to get them to the State
Meet. Whew, they qualified as the number 16 team
(only 18 qualify) and the rest is now history.
But this
record (and the 4x200) is very likely to
stand up to the test of time.

State Meet - Day
Two
Great Scott...
Cougars are four for for
The Cougars placed in every event
they competed in on Friday. LaTraia Scott won the
200 meters in an extremely impressive time and school
record of 23.98. LaTraia also ran on the third
place 4X200 meter team (Meredith Green, Liya Scott, Maia
Trujillo and LaTraia). Travvis Scott won the
high jump state championship (on misses) with a jump of
6' 7". Finally, Dusty Solis employed his deadly
kick to surge past five or six competitors down the
final stretch to claim the fourth place medal.
It was an awesome day for Coronado
with two gold medals, a school record and, a third place
relay and a fourth place finish. All of this on a
slow day when Coronado was only involved in four events.
Coronado will be participating in another four events on
Saturday and would love to have a repeat of Friday's
results.

Cougars Crush Two
Relay Records
In the preliminary heats, the team
of Meredith Green, Liya Scott, Maia Trujillo and LaTraia
Scott broke two sprint relay records in the span of two
hours. Their time of 1:42.76 in the 4x200 eclipsed
the record (by 1.28 seconds) set last week at the League
Meet. And then, less than 110 minutes later the
foursome ran a 49.46 in the 4x100 to best a record of
50.36 that they've been chasing for the past two years.
But this time, instead of coming close, they shattered
the record by a huge .9 seconds. The relay teams
drew a "lucky" lane four for each of the final races.
The finals of the 4x200 will be run on Friday afternoon
and the 4x100 will be run on Saturday.
LaTraia Scott ran her best times of
the year to advance with the number one seed in each of
the two sprints. LaTraia ran an 11.9 in the 100
and 24.76 in the 200. The finals for the 200 will
be run Friday afternoon with the finals in the 100
taking place on Saturday morning.
Travvis Scott advanced in the 400
meters with the eighth fastest time (49.76) of the
morning and will also run his finals on Saturday.
Andrew Hugill placed 12th in the
3200 meter run with a time of 9:53 and then contributed
to the thirteenth place finish in the 3200 meter relay.
In the 3200 relay, Andrew got a little help from
teammates, Dusty Solis, Dylan Witte and Ryan Logan for
the best time run by a Coronado team this century,
finishing in 8:07.81. Finally, the 13th ranked
4x400 relay team, consisting of Zach Gius, Travvis
Scott, Brice Holiday and Dusty Solis, finished 13th in
the qualifying rounds with a time of 3:26.
